Book Discussion Questions for Popular

Popular takes a look at the minefield that is high school popularity. Alissa says, “In Popular, I wanted to write a fun book about the world of high school cliques that was a little bit more than meets the eye.” The book expores the universal adolescent pressures of fitting in and belonging as well as taking a look at the idea of identity.

Here are some questions to help you get the discussion started:

This novel explores the idea of popularity. How would you define popularity? How are the characters in this novel like the “popular” crowd in your school? How are they different?

Who was your favorite character and why?

What are your thoughts on the “twist”? Did you expect this? Do you think it makes sense?

What is your opinion of Alex? Do you think he handled things appropriately? What would you have done differently in his place?

How do you feel about the way Mrs. Best handled things? What would you have done in her shoes?
